Don't Starve Your Brand by Putting All Your Eggs in 1 Basket

Sometimes you subscribe to RSS feeds and the information shared is less than worthy. Other times you hit the jackpot. Media Post's Ari Rosenberg, in his end of year post: Killing Your Print Business Starves Your Brand is great food for thought. In a world where Internet and Social Media is King, we sometimes forget the value of the media vehicles that came before and nullify their usefulness by over valuing the new and undervaluing the old. Plain talk, we need to utilize our media to their best advantage. It's like my former colleague, Barry once told me, "Karen  use your manager to his best advantage". What Barry was really saying was, take him cold calling with you, he loves it,  you love it less. Turns out that was the best advice ever.  What I am saying to you is, summed up by Ari in this article. Know how to use ALL your media to get the desired results you need. Share your thoughts on his insight and provide some of your own through comments right here. Just remember this formula : Public Relations (PR)=credibility, this stems from the relationships forged by the publicists in order to get you coverage by reporters, who cover your story or provide a platform for you to tell your brand story, build your brand then develop brand ambassadors. Marketing = Brand Awareness = Advertising, (yes pay for it and choose the appropriate medium) = Social Media = Internet Marketing. Don't destroy your brand by choosing 1 over the other. Manage your brand with the proper media mix.

Boomers on up show increasing use of Internet search-"Pew Research Center"

Still not including boomers in your internet marketing? Then you're missing an affluent demo whose Internet activity grows incrementally. According to the article, "Pew: Older Generations Catching Up On Web" - today's OnLine Media Daily,  http://ping.fm/YDTiO , Millennials (18-34) no longer dominate the Internet as they did in the past. With the popularity of search and email usage on the rise with all generations the gap is sharply closing. The study shows an increase in search activity in all age groups for healthcare, news, travel, online purchases and travel arrangements. Although the younger generation still out uses social networks, the study shows a steady incline in usage among the older generation with the sharpest climb in the 74 and up age group, with an increase of 16% since 2008. In this marketer's opinion, you will miss your turn if you continue to believe that Boomers (45-64), Silent Generations ( 65-73) and GI Generations (74+) are not tech savvy Internet users. Get on the bus and add a whole new target market to your potential customer base. Don't forget, this is an affluent market to tap into. Happy Holidays make your business soar.

It's December, the year end, time to do your year end business cleanup...

December, it's the end of the year, so let's clean up your business. "Why wait for spring cleaning when you can do it now"... Jim Blasingame. Jim Blasingame, the Small Business Advocate, is a one of the world's foremost experts on small business.  Some items on his list that should be addressed for the end of the year consists of:

Write this on a rock...Don't wait for spring. Start December cleaning today

Eliminate the stuff.
Even if you're not a pack rat, like me, you've accumulated stuff you don't use anymore. If you're not using it, throw it away; if it has value, sell it or give it away.
Deal with the graveyard.
Don't tell me you don't have one. Whether it's an old computer, printer or chair--even if it's not broken--if it hasn't been used recently, it's worse than clutter; it occupies valuable space. Sell it, give it away or give it a proper burial; just get it out the back door.
Fine-tune customers.
Use the ABCD approach: Identify the most profitable A's to the least profitable D's. Worship the A's, cater to the B's, encourage the C's and teach the D's about self-service. Customers demanding more commitment from you than they're willing to reciprocate may have to go find their future elsewhere.
Become an inventory Nazi.
As you did customers, categorize inventory from the most profitable A's to the least profitable D's. Stock lots of A's, some of the B's, maybe a couple of the C's, but never let one of the D's spend one night under your roof unless it's paid for. Remember, modern inventory management means just-in-time, not just-in-case.
Scrub accounts receivable.
Take the hit, and write off uncollectable A/R this year so you can start January with a clean list.

Use In-bound Marketing to Engage Clients Through Social Media

Create multiple doors to your brand using social media as your platform. In-bound marketing engages your clients and helps to increase brand awareness. It is not always financially feasible to spend globs of cash on outbound or push advertising, as it is called in the industry, to reach your ideal client. With the Internet, most businesses can utilize the power of social media, blogs, RSS feeds etc to bring clients interested in your brand into the fold, through multiple doors to your business. Engage them in conversation and keep them actively involved in the marketing and positioning of your product or service. Engaging consumers in a two way conversation, converts them to brand ambassadors who keep your brand alive and your message viral. It only takes a minute for a tweet to be picked up by a customer and re-tweeted. If you can master the art of social media and utilize it to your advantage then you have the luxury of having a push-pull media mix where your use both traditional and new age marketing and promotions to your advantage.
